Three Nights in August: Strategy, Heartbreak, and Joy Inside the Mind of a Manager
This book gives a behind the scene look at Tony La Russa and the Cardinals during a 3 game series with the Chicago Cubs. To help soak up the subculture, author Buzz Bissinger (Friday Night Lights) was given full access to La Russa’s squad for the entire 2003 season. This helps build out the characters of the players and how La Russa manages.
La Russa is a passionate, old school manager that has no concerns about calling out superstars for not playing the game right. This book contains inside stories from some of the outstanding teams he managed including the Canseco-Henderson Oakland Athletics days.
Favorite Quote: “Go find somebody who’s going to give you the four or five hundred at-bats and I hope they’re in our division so we can play against you.”
